CLB levels explained
CELPIP-General scores map 1:1 to the Canadian Language Benchmarks. Pick a level to see what it means, the CELPIP score you need, what it unlocks, and how to reach it.
- CLB 4
CLB 4 is an entry-level benchmark. For CELPIP it corresponds to a CELPIP level 4. It's most relevant for Canadian citizenship, which requires CLB 4 in Listening and Speaking.
- CLB 5
CLB 5 marks the step into intermediate English. For CELPIP it corresponds to a CELPIP level 5. It opens some trades and lower-tier work-experience streams.
- CLB 6
CLB 6 is solid intermediate English. For CELPIP it corresponds to a CELPIP level 6. Many Provincial Nominee streams and programs use it as a floor.
- CLB 7
CLB 7 is the headline benchmark for skilled immigration. For CELPIP it corresponds to a CELPIP level 7 in every ability. It's the minimum to enter the Express Entry pool through the main streams.
- CLB 8
CLB 8 is advanced English. For CELPIP it corresponds to a CELPIP level 8 in every ability. It boosts CRS points and meets many professional-licensing requirements.
- CLB 9
CLB 9 is where Express Entry rewards you most. For CELPIP it corresponds to a CELPIP level 9 in every ability. Reaching CLB 9 across all four skills earns near-maximum CRS language points.
- CLB 10
CLB 10 is highly advanced English. For CELPIP it corresponds to a CELPIP level 10 or higher. It secures the top tier of CRS language points.
