CLB 5
CLB 5 marks the step into intermediate English. For CELPIP it corresponds to a CELPIP level 5. It opens some trades and lower-tier work-experience streams.
CELPIP equivalent: CLB 5 = CELPIP level 5 in each ability.
What this level means
- You can handle everyday conversations and short workplace exchanges.
- You understand the main points of clear spoken passages on familiar topics.
- You can write connected sentences with some detail and basic organization.
What it unlocks
- Express Entry — Federal Skilled Trades (CLB 5 Listening and Speaking).
- Express Entry — Canadian Experience Class for NOC TEER 2/3 jobs (CLB 5).
How to reach it
- Expand beyond memorized phrases — practise paraphrasing the same idea two ways.
- Work on linking words (because, however, so) to connect ideas in writing.
- Time your responses; CLB 5 requires reasonable fluency, not just accuracy.
Practise toward CLB 5
The fastest way to a higher CLB is realistic, timed practice. Take a full Mock to baseline all four skills, then drill your weakest part.
