What's on the Writing Test?

Accepted Answer

Two tasks in 53 to 60 minutes. Task 1 is Writing an Email (150 to 200 words) to a friend, colleague, or business. Task 2 is Responding to Survey Questions (150 to 200 words) where you pick one of two options and argue for it.

Do I lose points for going under or over 150 to 200 words?

Accepted Answer

Yes, on both ends. Under 150 looks unfinished; over 200 looks unfocused. Aim for 170 to 190 words. Drafting in a notes panel and pasting in is fine — practising the live word counter is the more important skill.

Question 3

What matters more, grammar or content?

Accepted Answer

Both, but raters use four sub-criteria: content/coherence, vocabulary, readability, and task fulfillment. Perfect grammar with off-topic content still scores poorly. Address every part of the prompt, organize into clear paragraphs, then polish for grammar last.

Question 4

Should I always pick the option I personally agree with for Task 2?

Accepted Answer

No. Pick the option you can argue more clearly in 200 words. Raters do not score your personal opinion. They score how well you justify whichever side you chose. Sometimes the position you disagree with has cleaner, more concrete supporting points.
