Canadian Language Benchmark
CLB 7
CLB 7 is the headline benchmark for skilled immigration. For CELPIP it corresponds to a CELPIP level 7 in every ability. It's the minimum to enter the Express Entry pool through the main streams.
CELPIP equivalent: CLB 7 = CELPIP level 7 in all four abilities.
What this level means
- You can communicate effectively in most workplace and social situations.
- You understand detailed spoken and written material, including some nuance.
- You can write clear, organized texts with developed ideas and few errors.
What it unlocks
- Express Entry — Federal Skilled Worker (minimum to be eligible).
- Express Entry — Canadian Experience Class for NOC TEER 0/1 jobs.
- Earns meaningful CRS language points toward your overall score.
How to reach it
- Target your weakest skill first — CLB 7 must be met in all four abilities.
- Take full timed Mocks to expose where speed or accuracy drops under pressure.
- For Speaking and Writing, study sample responses at CLB 7+ and mirror their structure.
Practise toward CLB 7
The fastest way to a higher CLB is realistic, timed practice. Take a full Mock to baseline all four skills, then drill your weakest part.
